1. Considering our past: Unlike the Passover dinner, no lamb is mentioned as served at the Last Supper. Yet Jesus Himself IS our Passover Lamb whose blood rescues us from God’s righteous judgement to deliver us not only from the death angel but from death itself.
2. Considering the present: Matthew 26:27&28 Jesus through the cup of his blood offers us a New Covenant (foreseen in Jeremiah 31:31-34). By the New Covenant (vs the Law), God becomes internal and personal. The temporary sacrifice of animals is now permanent, eternal. God is now for us, accepts us, loves us! God gives us all the grace we need – again & again. His presence convicts us of sin & empowers us. He works inside us, writing His truth on our hearts and minds.
3. Considering the future: Matthew 26:28 & 29 We finish the meal together in eternity – the best feast in heaven for all peoples (Isaiah 25:6). We celebrate the Last Supper again & again on earth, but finally in perfection in heaven with all those in Christ. All will be restored between us as a perfect community in heaven. A cup of rejoicing and life!
